In 1873 Prinz Albrecht zu Solms-Braunfels established the famous kennel for working dogs as Hunde-Zuchtanstalt auf der Wolfsmühle. The stock of the Wolfsmühle was continously replenished with the best national and international purchases as well as with the own offspring. Wolfmühle was nonprofit, the income from selling dogs did not nearly cover the current costs. Being the largest and most exemplary kennel in these years in Germany and even in the European mainland, Wolfmühle attracted many visitors, among them the most named breeders of the UK, to tour the kennel as well as to purchase dogs. As reasons for the closing in 1889 there reckon among others the mysterious paralysis of the prince, who was from time to time constrained to a wheel chair, as well as the high costs.

Die Aktie von der Wolfsmühle wurde kontinuierlich wieder aufgefüllt, mit nationalen und internationalen Einkauf sowie die eigenen Nachkommen. Wolfmühle war Non-Profit, das Einkommen aus dem Verkauf von Hunde nicht annähernd die Kosten decken. Als der größte und am meisten vorbildliche Zwinger in diesen Jahren in Deutschland und auch in das europäische Festland, lockte Wolfmühle viele Besucher, unter ihnen die meisten benannten Züchter des Vereinigten Königreichs, die Zwinger sowie Tour, Hunde kaufen. Als Gründe für die Schließung im Jahr 1889 dort unter anderem die geheimnisvolle Lähmung des Prinzen,, die von Zeit zu Zeit auf einen Rollstuhl, sowie die hohen Kosten eingeschränkt wurde rechnen.
