Jowett et al. (1991b) showed that late veinlet sulfides are significantly enriched in isotopically heavy sulfur, with values up to -14.8%0, and that these veinlets were formed during the main period of ore formation. The occurrence of isotopically heavy sulfur was interpreted to be a result of the addition of 34S-enriched sulfur from the Rotliegend sediments below the Kupferschiefer. The view is further supported by the detection of allochthonous organic sulfur compounds at the base of the Kupferschiefer and is also confirmed by the application of ore petrological methods. In the present study, coal petrology is used to study the basal Zechstein from the Fore-Sudetic Monocline (Rudna mine) and the North-Sudetic Syncline (Konrad mine).
