More recent events that contributed to the basin morphology are bottom currents that eroded the moats surrounding the seamounts and the floor of the Albora´n Channel and kept the southern edge of the 361100N high sediment free, expulsion of gas and fluids that constructed the mounds at the base of the north slope and excavated circular depressions, pockmarks, throughout the basin and the Pleistocene glacially induced regressions / transgressions. As a result of these changes in sea level, the basin area shallower than 120m experienced cycles of erosion and deposition. Migration of the shoreline to the shelf’s edge and shift of the depocenter to the outer shelf and upper slope also led to the intensification of turbidity current activity on the basin slope and apron, leading to the formation of a submarine canyon on the basin margins.
