In the eighteenth and early nineteenth century the anthropological debates on racial origins took place between the main outlooks of monogenism and polygenism. While monogenism corresponds to the biblical notion of the unity and common origin of all humankind, polygenism refers to the belief that humans are divided into species with ancient and separate origins (see below). The latter has its roots in the age of European expansion when many scholars came to consider the newly discovered aboriginal peoples to be too different from Europeans to represent the same species. It experienced its heyday in the first half of the nineteenth century but as we will see lived on in evolutionary accounts of human racial origins.

Im achtzehnten und frühen neunzehnten Jahrhunderts die anthropologischen Debatten über rassische Herkunft fand zwischen den wichtigsten Perspektiven der Monogenismus und Polygenismus. Während Monogenismus entspricht dem biblischen Begriff der Einheit und des gemeinsamen Ursprungs der Menschheit bezieht Polygenismus zu der Überzeugung, dass die Menschen in Arten mit alten und separate Herkunft (siehe unten) unterteilt sind. Es erlebte seine Blütezeit in der ersten Hälfte des neunzehnten Jahrhunderts, aber wie wir sehen werden in der evolutionären Konten der menschlichen rassische Herkunft lebten.
