I am pleased to point out that inshore and traditional fishing – and I say this as a man from the south of Italy, who lives in close contact with the seafaring world on almost a daily basis – not only represents an extremely important source of income for thousands of European families living around our continent’s coasts, but also brings with it a centuries-old tradition that Europe must, in my view, support and preserve.

Ich hebe gern hervor, dass die Küstenfischerei und die handwerkliche Fischerei – und ich sage das als ein Mann aus Süditalien, der quasi tagtäglich im engen Kontakt mit dem Seefahrervolk lebt – nicht nur eine sehr wichtige Einkommensquelle für Tausende europäischer Familien an den Küsten unseres Kontinents darstellt, sondern auch für eine jahrhundertelange Tradition steht, die Europa meiner Meinung nach unterstützen und bewahren muss.
