The 'Umbrella tree' or 'Octopus Plant' usually grows as a climber on other trees in the rainforest, monsoon forest and sometimes woodlands of tropical Australia and New Guinea, it's roots resembling a strangler fig. Once established it may grow as a large tree in it's own right. It is called the 'umbrella' tree due to the circular arrangement of it's leaflets. The flowers are held in umbels along the long 'octopus' arms that are held at the end of the main stalk, high above the other branches and leaves. Later, small umbels of hard red fruits develop along the same arms. Specimens can easily be seen along the Cape Tribulation road.

Einmal eingerichtet kann es als einen großen Baum in seinem eigenen Recht zu wachsen. Man nennt sie die "Schirm" Baum durch die kreisförmige Anordnung der es Flugblätter. Die Blüten sind in Dolden an den langen 'octopus' Arme, die am Ende der Haupt Stiel gehalten werden, hoch über den anderen Zweigen und Blättern statt. Später entwickeln kleine Dolden von harten roten Früchten entlang der gleichen Arme. Die Proben können leicht entlang der Cape Tribulation Straße gesehen werden.

Mistletoes are partial parasites, that is they derive their water and nutrients from the host tree to its detriment, but their green leaves carry out photosynthesis, as do all green plants, to produce additional foods. Mistletoes have evolved a fascinating way of ensuring the dispersal of their fruits. Mistletoe birds and other frugivores eat the soft mistletoe berries.
