H2D+ provides us with information about extreme physical conditions. Chemical models suggest that it is one of the last molecules to freeze out onto the dust grains and disappear from the gas phase, making it an excellent indicator of the dynamic processes at the earliest phases of the birth of a star (protostar), deeply embedded in the molecular clouds.

H2D+ liefert uns Informationen über extreme physikalische Bedingungen. Entsprechend der chemischen Modelle friert es als eines der letzten Moleküle aus der Gasphase aus und lagert sich auf Stauboberflächen an – damit kann man mit diesem Molekül die Dynamik der frühesten Phasen der Sternentstehung, das heißt tief in die Molekülwolken eingebettete Protosterne, besonders gut beobachten.
