The electron transport in the bacterial RC is a cyclic process which results in no net oxidation-reduction. Rather, it functions to translocate protons from the cytoplasm across the plasma membrane to the environment. The resulting pH gradient is subsequently used for the synthesis of ATP. The process is therefore known as photophosphorylation.
