Frau amtierende Ratspräsidentin, auch ich danke Ihnen für Ihre freundlichen Worte, doch muß ich sagen, daß Sie leider bei weitem nicht den Erwartungen gerecht geworden sind, die dieses Parlament oder die demokratische Opposition in Äquatorialguinea angesichts der Probleme gehegt haben.

Madam President-in-Office of the Council, I too thank you for your kindness, but unfortunately I have to say that you have not by any means satisfied the expectations of this House or the democratic opposition in Equatorial Guinea as regards the situation we are dealing with.

Ich halte es daher für unerlässlich, dass die Europäische Union- warum eigentlich nicht auf Vorschlag dieser beiden Länder- eine gemeinsame Aktion für Demokratie und Menschenrechte billigt und mit einem Drittland Gespräche führt, das außerordentliches Interesse an Äquatorialguinea hat, nicht aus den vorgenannten Gründen, sondern wegen des dort vorkommenden Erdöls: die USA.

I therefore feel that it is essential that the European Union- why not at the suggestion of those countries?- approve a joint action to commit itself to democracy and human rights, and also that it talk to another country that is extraordinarily interested in Guinea, not due to these matters, but because of oil, that is the United States.

Herr Präsident, Herr Kommissionspräsident! Einer Ihrer berühmten Vorgänger, Jacques Delors, hat kürzlich in einem Interview gesagt, dass sich das Europäische Parlament besser mit Fragen befassen sollte, welche die Europäerinnen und Europäer betreffen, als sich mit den Menschenrechten in Guatemala oder den Frauenrechten in Äquatorialguinea auseinander zu setzen.

It is for us in the European Parliament, being also delegates to the Convention, to publicly denounce this national tug-of-war, to do so with all possible determination, and as loudly as we can, so that it is not just nationalism that makes its voice heard in Europe, but also the ideal of political unity!

Herr Haarder, der Rat mag denken, was er will, aber der Regierung von Äquatorialguinea mehr zu glauben als der Opposition, ist zuviel des Glaubens.

Mr Haarder, the Council can think what it likes, but, of course, believing the government of Equatorial Guinea instead of the opposition is too much to believe.

Äquatorialguinea hat dieses Schreiben nicht beantwortet.
