The CPDS was legalised in February 1993 in the wake of pressure from the international community: the regime had put up considerable resistance to the legalisation of this and other political organisations, and had denigrated the CPDS as being incompatible with the 'experiment in democracy'which was then being officially promoted by the government of Equatorial Guinea.

Subject: Arrest of opposition leaders in Equatorial GuineaThe Secretary-General of the party Convergence for Social Democracy (CPDS) in Equatorial Guinea, Plácido Micó Abogo, has been under house arrest since he was arrested on 9 May 2002 on the grounds that an alleged 'meeting'at his house, at which plans for a coup against President Obiang are claimed to have been discussed, had included the participation of Emilio Ndong Biyogo and Felipe Ondo Obiang.

Der Generalsekretär der Partei Convergencia para la Democracia Social (CPDS) von Äquatorialguinea, Plácido Micó Abogo, ist unter Hausarrest gestellt worden, nachdem er am 9. Mai festgenommen worden war, weil er an einer mutmaßlichen Sitzung im Haus von Emilio Ndong Biyogo und Felipe Ondo Obiang teilgenommen hatte, in der angeblich von Plänen zum Umsturz von Präsident Obiang die Rede war.Die CPDS wurde im Februar 1993 auf Druck der internationalen Gemeinschaft legalisiert, nachdem das Regime, das der CPDS vorwarf, mit dem Projekt des'demokratischen Experiments', für das die Regierung von Äquatorialguinea damals eintrat, unvereinbar zu sein, sich der Legalisierung dieser und anderer Parteien hartnäckig widersetzt hatte.
