Der Ästuar des Cape Fear Rivers ist Teil des amerikanischen Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway.

Um die immer größer werdenden Kreuzfahrtschiffe der Meyer Werft von Papenburg in die Nordsee überführen zu können wurden bislang 80 Flusskilometer der Ems fünf Mal vertieft. Diese Vertiefungen führen dazu, dass sich die Brackwassergrenze weiter in das Binnenland verschiebt. Ausgehend von dem Ems Ästuar ist die Brackwasserzone 55 km lang. Die untere Brackwassergrenze (Übergang Salzwasser – Brackwasser) liegt bei Emden die Obere Brackwassergrenze (Übergang Süßwasser – Brackwasser) liegt bei Leer.
