For a decade, of course, athletes from East Germany made a colossal impact on the Olympics with its diabolical, sophisticated drugs programme. America held up its hands in horror. Now it has closed ranks. One of its foremost athletes, asked by the BBC this week to discuss the subject on air, refused point blank.
