The ride was awkward. Both Dad and I were really uncomfortable, and it was easier to ride in silence than try to force ourselves to talk. Finally we reached the “drop off” spot, which was in the parking lot of a grocery store. A white van was waiting to pick up me and three other kids. I noticed that all of us tried to act cool when we said goodbye to our parents, but it was just an act. A guy got out of the van. He was young and looked like some guy in college who was working as a camp counselor for the summer. He had a clipboard with our names on it, and he had to shuffle it back and forth from one hand to the other as he checked off our names and then shook hands with our parents and us. He introduced himself as Nick and helped us get our stuff stowed away in the van and find seats.

Er stellte sich als Nick und halfen uns unsere Sachen verstaut in den van und Plätze zu finden.
