The narrator can treat the characters humorously or with irony. The use of irony means that what is said is not actually meant, or that the reader and narrator are aware of something that the character is not. A good example of irony is when the woman in Hastings asks: „Would you say I'm more than one day old?“ What she really means is that she knows very well that Sam wants the room for a girl and himself. The irony of the whole situation is that this is exactly what Sam does not want.
