The guanosine cofactor does not supply energy for the reaction. Its 3’-OH group rather carries out a nucleophilic attack to the 5’ splice site and forms a phosphodiester bond with the intron’s 5’ end.
The 3’-OH group of the newly liberated 5’ exon forms a phosphodiester bond with the 5’ terminal phosphate of the 3’ exon.
The two exons are thereby joined and the intron is released.
