July – August is a remarkable period in cultural life of the island. It is the time of celebrating the most important festival - Kandy Esala Perahera which honours the sacred tooth relic of Kandy. On the day of the annual Hindu festival called Vel the decorated chariot of Skanda, the God of war, is ceremonially carried across Colombo’s and Jaffna’s streets from one temple to another. Miraculous self-mortifications are displayed at Kataragama festival.
